Reflection Paragraph

While researching the career on being a professional chef, I have learned many things that I did not know.  I have learned that the salaries of the wages change depending on your location, and industry.  Even though you might love or know how to cook that does not mean that cooking is meant for you.  To succeed at being a chef you must have the passion for cooking, also love and enjoy doing it. As a chef there a certain training requirements, even if you already know how to cook. It comes from basic skills like holding a knife, or to correct sanitation skills.  To help yourself cook more it is best to cook for your family, and friends.   You must also have the ability to work well with others , and be a dependable worker. Learning another language can help, such as Spanish.  The individual will need to be able to be under constant pressure like standing on your feet all day. The heavy lifting, noise, is also a great pressure on the individual.

It is most surprising to me that chefs wages changes depending on location. Also chefs are ranked in three different percentiles. The top 10, the middle, and the bottom 10.
Now that I have researched all about being a chef I have changed my mind I plan on going to college in August to become a Paralegal.

Question 8

How much money does a professional chef make?

_____________________________________________________________________________________

As a professional chef individuals makes different amounts of money.  The wages of chefs varies depending on what percent the chefs are in.  Chefs can be within the top 10 percent the middle or the bottom 10 percent. In the top 10 percent chefs make $70,960 a year or more which is at least $34.11 an hour.  In the 50th percentile $40,630 a year was made. In the last 10 percent there was annually or less than $23,260 a year.
The type of workplace the individual is in can affect his or her salary.  The location of the individuals workplace can play a significant role in how much his or her salary is.  Many chefs relocate to states that have a higher level of employment for chefs.  The states would be Florida, Texas, Illinois, and New York.  The median wages for chefs or the 50 percentile was found in the mid-Atlantic, New England, and Pacific.  The lowest median wages were found in the West North Central region.  In this region the states are Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri ("Chef and Culinary Career Information").
According to simply hired the average salary for professional jobs  is $45,00.   The average chef salary changes depending on the location, company, benefits, industry, and experience.  Chefs salary's also changes depending on what type of chef the individual is considered.  The graph below shows the average salary for other types of professional chefs.

Question 7

What are the Cons of being a Chef?
_________________________________________________________________________________

Being A chef might seem fun to an individual but there are also some cons of being a chef. As a chef he or she often work hours that are opposite of his or her friends and family hours. A career as a chef  might seem like it is easy but it's hard work. While being a chef there are no shortcuts. As and individual he or she will have to start at or near the bottom, even if he or she has a formal education. If a chef works in a commercial kitchen it can be stressful. Being stress is a one of the most leading factors that plays as a relatively high turnover rate within the food-service industry. Chefs tend to work long hour, which is at least an 10-hour shift. Some executive chefs regularly work much longer. In the industry of being a professional chef it faces a fair share of issues, which includes a gender gap in pay and in positions. "According to the American Culinary Federation (ACF), only 19 percent of all chefs and head cooks are female. Plus, there is a wage gap between men and women " ("Chef and Culinary Career Information").

There are also two major cons of being a chef, which is competition, and stress and difficulty. The competition for a chef positions in prestigious restaurants and other high-paid situations is strong. As a chef there must competition with his or her peers in culinary skill and in his or her ability to market new foods and attract customers. The care of a chef can be stressful and physically demanding. Chefs hours may tend to be late into the night. The individual must be strong enough to handle the food prep equipment and large quantities of ingredients. He or she must be able to work fast to provide food on time for the customers that are waiting. Chefs must learn quickly on the job to advance through the ranks. The time pressure in a kitchen leaves little room for mistakes (Hartman).

Question 4

What skills are needed to become a professional chef?

___________________________________________________________________________________

There are three types of skills needed to become a professional chef.  The three skills needed are safety and sanitation, basic cooking, and specialty cooking skills.
In most culinary schools, the first thing that a new student learns is how to maintain safety and good sanitation in a restaurant. The individual will not be a successful chef regardless of how good a cook he or she is. There are specific skills that are needed including knowing how to keep your equipment clean and how to properly store food so that it will not spoil. Learning how to rotate food is also essential in a kitchen. To prevent spoilage a good chef is mindful to use older products before newer ones. Safety is vital in a working kitchen and he or she must understand how to use larger restaurant-grade appliances, such as meat grinders and over-sized food processors.
Basic cooking skills must be mastered in order to become a quality chef. A good knowledge of very basic kitchen procedures is needed like how to properly hold a knife. The individual  will also need to know what pots and pans are used for specific foods and types of cooking.  In basic cooking methods such as boiling, sauteing and poaching is required. Knowing how to handle and prepare meats in a variety of settings, such as braising and grilling, is also the mark of a good cook.
Once the basic cooking skills and methods are mastered, a chef may choose to break into a specialty area. Which is a specific style of cooking, such as French or Italian, or a chef may select a specific subgroup to focus on, such as meats or baking. If the chef is baking he or she would need to be well versed in pastries, bread making, torts and cakes. Other skills for a baker are excellent cake decorating methods and how to work with sugar and mold chocolate (Roop).
According to Christopher Gross a chef must have the top 5 skills. The top 5 skills to him are
is develop an extremely well-tuned palette. The chef should get in the habit of tasting at every stage of the cooking process.A chef must also be an expert with kitchen tools, knowledgeable about products and absolutely strict about maintaining the highest level of hygiene. Also, a chef is something of a role model in the kitchen and must keep his or her surroundings professional. And last, a successful chef will have the imagination and courage to explore, experiment and introduce new culinary feats to the world with complete confidence (Gross).

Question 3

What classes or courses are needed to be taken to be a professional chef?

____________________________________________________________________________________

The classes and courses that are needed to be taken are basic and science classes, creation/ preparation, menu design, presentation, management and internships. The basic and science class will start by teaching you important information every chef needs to know before cooking professionally. Some of the courses specialize in training the individual  how to use chef's knives and making various cuts. Others will teach he or she about different types of cooking appliances and how to use them. Other chef classes teaches the individual the science behind baking and the chemical interactions that different foods create. Creation/ preparation classes focus on making the food. These are the classes that the individual will be operating with an oven, stove and cutting board to develop the skills needed. These classes teach the chef's how to combine ingredients and how to tell when food is ready to be served. The focus is primarily on taste and timing. Creation classes can be split into different food types, such as Poultry, Meat and Fishes, or Sauces. A menu design classes is a thing for chefs who want to start their own restaurants. The Menu course teaches you what classes of food work well together and how to present them on a menu. On a menu it needs to include appetizers, entrees, beverages and a number of other selections, with appropriate pairings and descriptions. Menu classes may also teaches graphic design and pricing elements. Presentation classes are like food presentation; which is how the food looks on the plate, bowl or platter. This is an important, often under appreciated aspect of food preparation. The vital aspect is the appearance of food. The Chefs that runs a kitchen needs to manage money and people. As a chef he or she is in charge of ordering supplies and pricing menu items (Lacoma). As a potential chef he or she obtains culinary knowledge through formal apprenticeships. Formal apprenticeships combine hands-on training with classroom education.
As an aspiring chef he or she may pursue formal training through culinary programs that are offered by community colleges, universities and culinary institutes. Some chefs can complete certificate programs that typically last a few months, or earn a 2-year associates or 4-year bachelor's degrees. Culinary programs focus on in-class instruction and hands-on training in the kitchen. Courses commonly include safety and sanitation, baking and cooking techniques, food preparation and nutrition. Internships is required depending on the program ("Educational requirements for becoming a professional chef. ").

As a personal chef the job requires little training, and as an individual he or she must be able to see first hand how things should be run. Most of the courses begin with kitchen sanitation and go on to teach the basic training in preparing food, such as slicing and dicing methods for meats and vegetables. As well as basic cooking methods like baking, broiling and grilling.  Also to help become a professional chef, cook a much as possible for friends, family, and coworkers to help develop a cooking style that an individual will like. There are three other types of training that is needed to become a chef.  The three things are considered to be a high school/college, an apprenticeship program, and certification (Riley 2-9).  It takes many of years of training, the individual needs a love and passion for food and cooking. Apprentiship usually takes up to three years and internship takes up to one year. These are two things that an individual must complete as an requirnment because most employers in the field today will not accept less than hands-on training when it comes to hiring people who prepare the food for which their establishments are known. It is highly recomended for you to take a formal education route (Londrie).
